Family-fun way to get bushfire ready at Mundaring Arena
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) invites the community to brush up on their bushfire knowledge at the Bushfire Community Day in Mundaring this Sunday.
Held in conjunction with the Shire of Mundaring and the DFES Bushfire Centre of Excellence (BCoE), the family-friendly event held at Mundaring Arena will feature an array of indoor and outdoor activities.
DFES Acting Chief Superintendent BCoE Craig Garrett said the free day out enabled emergency service personnel to communicate directly with the community about what actions they need to take to prepare for a bushfire.
“The Bushfire Community Day is a fun and engaging way to guide Western Australians to the educational products and materials available from DFES and their local governments that will help them prepare their property and emergency kit,” he said.
“Children can dress up as a firefighter, use a fire hose or sit inside the world’s smallest fire tanker while you get to speak to the experts to ensure your family is prepared this bushfire season.
“Our firefighters do a tremendous job but the reality is that they cannot protect every home from bushfire. With our State being more than 93 per cent bushfire prone, it is critical people have a plan to stay safe and make quick decisions.”
Attendees can meet firefighters from more than 10 Bush Fire Brigades, speak to specialists from across the bushfire sector, view live demonstrations and take part in mock evacuations so people know what it is like leaving in an emergency.
Those wishing to attend the event can register via the Bushfire Community Day 2025 booking page.
DFES launched the inaugural event in 2021, opening the DFES BCoE facility to the public and highlighting the achievements of WA’s bushfire management sector.
In 2024, the BCoE co-hosted the event with the City of Kalamunda at Hedley Jorgensen Park which attracted more than 2500 attendees.
Established in 2019, the BCoE is the primary vehicle to share information about bushfire management in WA, strengthening the capability of the sector through the provision of knowledge, training and engagement to reduce the impacts of bushfire.
