Contests and camaraderie on show at annual firefighting championships
Bassendean Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services (VFRS) took out the top award for the second year running at the 114th annual WAVFRS Association Easter State Championships on the weekend.
Held at Gilbert Fraser Reserve in North Fremantle on Saturday and Sunday, the championships showcased the skills that VFRS firefighters have built upon for more than a century.
This year’s event featured in excess of 150 firefighters from 23 teams from across Western Australia. A group of formidable opponents from Victoria also travelled to compete.
Marc Papalia from Bassendean VFRS won the Champion’s Trophy to claim his ninth consecutive title.
Chase Milligan, also from Bassendean VFRS, was awarded the inaugural Best Female Firefighter.
The events have evolved from firefighters training exercises in the late 1800s. Teams highlighted their speed, dexterity, teamwork and leadership while using equipment such as hydrants, hoses, reels and ladders.
Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Wayne Gregson said the long-running championships were a testament to the important contribution volunteer firefighters make to Western Australia.
“No matter what the situation, incident or hazard, volunteer firefighters display an outstanding focus and dedication that leaves the community in awe of what they do,” Commissioner Gregson said.
“These championships highlight the commitment of volunteer firefighters to continuously enhancing their skills to assist and protect the people of Western Australia.”
Commissioner Gregson said the event had also been an opportunity for volunteer firefighters to share their knowledge and experiences.
