DFES opens its doors at the annual Bushfire Community Day
You will get to meet DFES staff and local bushfire brigades while having fun learning how to prepare your home and family for the upcoming bushfire season.
The free event is happening at the Bushfire Centre of Excellence at 20 Dollyup Street in Nambeelup - register today so you don’t miss out!
Interactive and engaging information booths will showcase a range of bushfire preparedness topics including bushfire plans, the DFES My Bushfire Plan App, when to call Triple 000, bushfire resources and tools, what to do with your animals during an emergency and the important role of cultural fire and more.
DFES Acting Chief Superintendent Bushfire Centre of Excellence Craig Garrett said it would be an action-packed day for all ages and interests.
“We’re heading into summer so now is the perfect time to start thinking about how you can prepare your family and property for bushfire,” he said.
“We have lots of activities to entertain and educate the kids and specialists from across the bushfire sector who are ready to offer valuable information, advice and support.”
There will be fire trucks, emergency services personnel, food trucks, a sausage sizzle, children’s activities including face painting, a rock climbing tower, animal farm and more.
Acting Chief Superintendent Garrett said a variety of demonstrations would run throughout the day, including burnover drills, firewise gardening, St John demos as well as the K9 urban search and rescue dogs.
“See what it takes to be an emergency services cadet! Our cadets from Quinns Rock, Two Rocks, Coolup and Mandurah will impress you with their special effects makeup replicating cuts and bruises, rock climbing and rescue skills,” he said.
“Want to really get into the experience? The RAC Rescue Helicopter simulator will take you on a 4-minute and 360-degree mission using virtual reality technology while our Bushfire Simulation team will have virtual reality videos showing you a range of bushfire behaviours.”
This year’s event offers a little extra with the new Food Innovation Precinct Western Australia, located next door, opening its doors to showcase its new research and innovation hub. Murdoch University, Development WA, Innovation Design Entrepreneurship Academy and the Peel Development Commission are some other organisations you can meet on the day.
Spinifex Brewing Co, who have a production facility within the Precinct, will have a beer garden with live music from 12-5pm. Tours of the brewery will run throughout the day.
