The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) has launched its Strategy 2026-2031, outlining how the agency will continue to support and protect Western Australian communities in an increasingly complex emergency management environment.

The strategy sets a clear direction for the next five years, focusing on managing evolving risks, developing future capabilities and leaders, harnessing data and information and leading excellence in emergency management.

Developed with input from hundreds of volunteers and staffstaff and volunteers across the State, the strategy reflects the collective experience, expertise and commitment of the people who serve Western Australian communities before, during and after emergencies.

DFES Commissioner Darren Klemm AFSM said the strategy built on the agency's strong foundations while preparing for future challenges.

"The emergency management landscape continues to evolve and this strategy provides a clear pathway for DFES to remain a trusted, capable and forward-looking agency," Commissioner Klemm said.

"It reflects the ideas, expertise and dedication of our people and will help ensure we continue to meet the changing needs of the communities we serve."

Deputy Commissioner Strategy and Emergency Management Melissa Pexton said communities were at the heart of the strategy.

"Every contribution from our staff and volunteersvolunteers and staff helps build safer, more prepared and resilient communities," Deputy Commissioner Pexton said.

"The strategy will guide how we strengthen our capabilities, develop future leaders, harness data and information, and continue building strong partnerships across government, industry and the community."

The DFES Strategy 2026–2031 reinforces the agency's commitment to working as one coordinated, community-focused organisation and delivering better outcomes for Western Australians.

By aligning planning, operations and service delivery with the strategy's priorities, DFES will continue to protect, support and empower communities across the State.
