​Firefighting graduates ready to respond

This graduate school includes 10 emergency services volunteers, who will bring a wealth of experience and specialised skills to the Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Wayne Gregson commended the dedication and commitment of the 24 graduates to serve the Western Australian community.

"To decide to become a firefighter is an admirable choice, with firefighters often confronted with high pressure situations, where they need to make split second decisions to protect life and property,” Commissioner Gregson said.

"The graduates have undergone an intensive 17-week training course at the Fire and Emergency Services Academy and developed their skills in firefighting, road crash rescue, hazardous materials and community safety.

"The men and women graduating today will be a valuable addition to the emergency services, working side by side with staff and volunteers from many agencies to protect and serve the Western Australian community.”

Twenty-eight-year-old Callum McCrudden has volunteered with the East Gidgegannup Bush Fire Brigade since he was 16, and said his volunteer experience was a key influence in wanting to take up firefighting as a career.

"Having thoroughly enjoyed helping the community over the years, I decided to challenge myself and was fortunate enough to be selected to undergo this rigorous training,” Callum said.

The new firefighters will be stationed across Perth and in Kalgoorlie.
