Get bushfire ready while enjoying summer sounds

West Australians can brush up on their bushfire preparations during an afternoon of family fun in October with the return of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) crowd-favourite Bushfire Community Day.

DFES and the City of Kwinana are hosting the annual event on Saturday 17 October at Honeywood Oval in Wandi, pulling together an impressive line-up of live music, entertainment, food trucks and interactive emergency services displays

Now in its sixth year, the event provides a hands-on opportunity to learn practical bushfire preparedness skills before the southern bushfire season.

From 12pm, community members can connect directly with bushfire experts and local volunteer firefighters while exploring interactive displays, demonstrations and family-friendly activities to better understand their own bushfire risk and prepare for emergencies.

Visitors will be able to learn how to create a bushfire plan, understand emergency warnings, reduce bushfire risk around their property – including firewise gardening – and prepare animals for emergencies.

The event will also feature emergency services displays, fire truck demonstrations, a burnover drill, firefighter activities, the RAC Rescue Helicopter experience, virtual reality experiences, children's activities and opportunities to meet the people who help keep communities safe year-round.

DFES Chief Superintendent Bushfire Centre of Excellence Grant Pipe said the event has been attended by thousands of people each year and a great opportunity for hands-on learning ahead of the next bushfire season.

"Bushfire Community Day gives people the chance to ask questions, hear from local experts and gain a better understanding of the support available before, during and after an emergency," he said.

This year's Bushfire Community Day will be delivered as part of the City of Kwinana's popular Summer Sounds event, creating a unique opportunity for residents to connect with emergency services, learn valuable bushfire preparedness skills and enjoy a vibrant afternoon of live entertainment. Alongside interactive displays and safety demonstrations, visitors can enjoy local food vendors, take part in the Summer Sounds Food Passport and relax with live music from 2pm.

Whether you're new to a bushfire-prone area or looking to refresh your preparedness plans, Bushfire Community Day offers practical information, expert guidance and activities for all ages.
