If it’s flooded, forget it: DFES urges caution after cyclone

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has advised that although the cyclone has now passed, floodwaters will continue to cause hazardous conditions.

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm (AFSM) said people in floodwater-affected areas should remain on alert despite rains easing today.

“It’s vitally important people don’t think the danger has passed now an All Clear has been issued,” Commissioner Klemm said.

“Our message is, ‘If it’s flooded, forget it’.

“Community safety is the priority, and we’re urging people not to drive through floodwaters and not to swim or play in them.

“Flood waters are very deceptive in terms of depth, speed and contaminants, and people shouldn’t be attempting to enter them in any way.”

DFES personnel and volunteers continued to work long hours assessing the damage caused by the destructive winds and rainfall, the Commissioner said.

“Our incredible SES volunteers have been working with volunteer firefighters and Urban Search and Rescue teams to respond to more than 100 calls for assistance,” he said.

“The focus is on making roads safe to reopen, clearing debris and fallen trees, and helping people whose homes have been damaged.

“DFES is also continuing to supply communities cut off by flood waters with food and other essential supplies as needed.

“Supplies are being coordinated by the State Emergency Service and delivered in DFES’ Dauphin helicopter.

“Frontline services and local governments are working together to get the community back on track and get life back to normal as soon as possible.”
