NAFM Forum 2025: Fire Managers meet in Broome to drive Innovation and Collaboration

More than 80 fire practitioners, researchers, Indigenous leaders and government representatives gathered in Broome from 2–4 July 2025 for the North Australia Fire Managers (NAFM) Forum – a key event focused on shaping the future of fire management across northern Australia.
Under the theme ‘Advancing Operational Excellence – Overcoming Barriers, Enhancing Incentives, Strengthening Collaboration’, the forum featured keynote addresses, panel discussions and field trips exploring climate adaptation, cultural fire practices and emerging technologies.
NAFM Chair Trevor Howard described the forum as a significant achievement:
“It was fantastic to have so many fire experts meet in Broome. We’re building a collaborative fire management community that respects Country, embraces innovation and prepares for the challenges ahead” he said.
“The diversity of voices and strength of ideas shared at the Forum will help shape a more resilient and inclusive future for fire management in the north.”
Forum highlights included:
- A Welcome to Country by Yawaru Elder Aunty Dianne Appleby.
- Keynotes from AFAC CEO Robb Webb and Professor Jeremy Russell-Smith from Charles Darwin University.
- Sessions on climate science, satellite fire simulations and community-led initiatives.
- Field trips showcasing remote and collaborative fire management in the Kimberley
The event was coordinated by the DFES Bushfire Centre of Excellence and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, with strong support from the NAFM Working Group.
