New Year heralds arrival of Wet Season in the North West

The possibility of a tropical cyclone impacting the Kimberley and Pilbara over the coming weeks is a timely reminder that residents in Western Australia’s North West need to prepare their homes and families.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s forecast suggests the first tropical low of the season could form over waters north of Western Australia during the next few days, with the potential for it to develop into a Tropical Cyclone from Sunday.

Dominant climate influences for northern Australia over recent months have weakened in the past week. As a result, the State’s north will now be at a heightened cyclone risk.

The Kimberley and Pilbara regions will start to experience weather conditions that look and feel much more like a typical wet season with an increase in the likelihood of damaging winds, heavy rainfall and severe flooding.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services Assistant Commissioner Country Operations Paul Ryan said it was important for people in the North West to start preparing for cyclones and extreme weather conditions.

“We urge all residents in the North West to regularly inspect, maintain and repair their property to help protect people sheltering in it during a cyclone – do not leave preparations to the last minute and get caught short,” Assistant Commissioner Ryan said.

“Think ahead and prepare a cyclone plan for you and your family. When a cyclone hits, there won’t be time to think. A cyclone plan will help you act appropriately before, during and after an event.

“Have an emergency kit ready, including a portable battery-operated radio, torch, spare batteries, mobile phone and charger, first aid kit and enough food and water for at least five days.

“Take some time to learn about the cyclone warning system, including what you need to do at each warning level, and familiarise yourself with the Emergency WA website.”
