Prepare now as cyclone approaches Kimberley and Pilbara coast

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has advised that a low north of Kuri Bay could develop into a tropical cyclone tomorrow.

BoM Severe Weather Services Manager Brad Santos said the current forecast shows that the Tropical Low is expected to intensify as it moves southwest over water later this week.

“The Tropical Low is forecast to move generally parallel to the coast, with communities along the Kimberley and possibly the Pilbara coast at risk of experiencing damaging winds, squally thunderstorms and heavy rain which could cause damage to homes,” Mr Santos said.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services Acting Chief Superintendent Country North Paul Carr said it was important people prepared themselves and their properties before the weather hit, and reconsider travel plans.

“Ahead of the Australia Day long weekend we urge all travellers and people returning home to plan their journey ahead of time to avoid the severe weather, and under no circumstances drive through floodwaters,” Acting Chief Superintendent Carr said.

“A cyclone can cause extensive road closures, loss of communications and power, food shortages and airport closures.”

“It is essential that if you are in the North West of the State, especially along the coast, that you understand the cyclone warning system and take responsibility for your own safety.

Simple tips to prepare ahead of cyclone or flood include:

Securing loose items around your property

• Preparing an emergency kit with a portable battery operated radio, torch, spare batteries, mobile phone, first aid kit and enough food and water for at least four days
• Preparing a family cyclone plan
• Listening to ABC local radio and keeping up to date on the Emergency WA website www.emergency.wa.gov.au

This is expected to be the first tropical cyclone off the Western Australian coast this wet season.
