Community invited to inaugural bushfire preparedness day

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) will welcome members of the community to its Bushfire Community Day this Saturday 30 October from 10am to 3pm.

Community members will be able to speak with bushfire preparedness experts and representatives from across DFES through a series of fun and interactive activities and displays.

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm AFSM said he hoped the public would take the opportunity to head down to the free open day event and find out how to prepare their homes, households and communities for the season ahead.

“We just experienced one of our most devastating bushfire seasons in recent years and the Bushfire Community Day will give people the chance to understand and plan for their bushfire risks, while also providing a behind-the-scenes look at how firefighters respond during an emergency,” Commissioner Klemm said.

“We will have all the experts on hand to help the community develop their bushfire plans on the My Bushfire App, learn how to build a firewise garden and manage bushfire fuels on their property and even how to prepare their animals for a bushfire emergency.”

The event, which promises to deliver an exciting and informative day for the entire family, will be hosted at DFES’ Australian-first Bushfire Centre of Excellence facility in the Peel Business Park, just 45 minutes drive from the Perth CBD.

Attendees will gain an insight into cultural burning activities, learn what it takes to become a career firefighter ahead of the next recruitment drive and get an up close and personal look into how first responders are trained to deal with a burnover situation.

Other family friendly activities include displays from the State Emergency Service Canine Unit, rides in the RAC Rescue helicopter simulator, hands-on tours of firefighting trucks, face-painting and an animal farm.

The event is free but is ticketed so community members are strongly encouraged to register prior to Saturday to avoid disappointment. More information on registering can be found here
