Firefighter recruitment now in full swing

Western Australians have an opportunity to join the next generation of career firefighters, with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services’ (DFES) annual recruitment drive underway.

DFES is welcoming applicants from all walks of life who are seeking a challenging and rewarding career.

On average, more than 1000 people apply to become a firefighter every year, with approximately 24 selected for each trainee firefighter school.

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm AFSM said firefighting was only one aspect of the job and recruits would learn skills to respond to a range of hazards.

“Being physically strong is not the most important part of being a firefighter – the job also requires critical thinking and the ability to cope with high-pressure environments,” Commissioner Klemm said.

“A successful firefighter should be able to embed themselves within a community and forge valuable relationships with others.

“Being a firefighter can open up a very rewarding career pathway, with the ability to branch out into a number of different areas such as fire investigation and air operations.”

Commissioner Klemm said DFES was also looking to encourage more women to consider firefighting as a career.

“We want to dispel any notion that firefighting is a career best suited to men – it’s simply not the case,” he said.

“Diversity makes any organisation stronger and the emergency services family welcomes everyone, no matter their gender or background, to put themselves forward.”

A five-month assessment follows the online application where selected people will be required to complete cognitive and personality tests, physical aptitude tests and written tasks.

Applications close on Monday December 13.
